ThinApp on Windows 7 Beta 1
January 11, 2009
Today I installed the first Beta release of Windows 7. I thought, it can always be better than Windows Vista
. The installation of the new Operating System was no problem at all. Boot from dvd and go ahead to drink some coffee. Actually it was not painfull for me to install this on my laptop because all data is stored safe at a seperate partition and all of my applications are ThinApp’s. After the installation of the OS and looking around at the new features I copied one of my existing ThinApp applications to Windows 7. When I start the application an error message is shown up and the application will not start. Maybe I had to package my ThinApp’s on Windows 7? I installed the latest available VMware ThinApp 4.0.1 build 2866 and start ThinApp Setup Capture. From that moment it is clear to me that ThinApp is not yet ready for Windows 7.

same here – maybe it’s microsofts way of getting rid of the problem posed by portable apps
Makes windows 7 completely useless to me as like you most of my apps are portable and I’d sooner stick with a bare bones install of XP & have them all run than have to go through the pain of reinstalling everything again.

“From that moment it is clear to me that ThinApp is not yet ready for Windows 7″
I read somewhere that microsoft had stated that all apps currently run in Vista will be guaranteed to run in W7 so isnt it a case of them sorting out the problem? If they dont it would impact the take up of W7 from any organization running on virtualized apps as the whole point of them is being cross-os
As far as my own portableapps what I’ve tried so far is about 30%/70% 30% being the ones that work!!

Looks like App-V doesn’t support it either.

Yep, same thing here. All ThinApp / Thinstall applications crash under Windows 7, even the most simple ones. I agree with Paul: The only reason I decided to try Windows 7 was because I expected “thinapped” applications to work. It’s much quicker to restore my Acronis Windows XP image than reinstalling anything on this.

Hello, i followed the link from the blog of Holger,
I tried all my Thinapps and found out, that not all corrupt. Some of the apps still work.
I made a video with my Apps under Win 7 and uploaded it to youtube:

(the “&fmt=18″ is for better quality ^^)

@RodneyMullen: thanks, interesting video. How did you make Autodesk 3D studio work with thinapp in the first place ? most of the autodesk applications that I tried crash immediately if run the thinapp sandbox (AutoCAD LT, 3D Studio, etc.).

I wanted to make an video tutorial but the VMware make problems with capturing movies and and have not as much time but I can say some details:
First I capture alls my apps with vista and not xp because I had with many apps problems run under vista which I captured in XP.
The second thing is the license, I have installed an trial version without license because in the packed exe the license expired.
the dir isolation mode was i think writecopy, and I made it as short as possible so that the fast compressed package was around 130mb in size.
And it is also interesting which version you have tested (my was 2009) maybe in earlier versions it could not run
hope something helps

At the VMWare forums the say they’re looking into it:

Hopefully this will be fixed soon and for the final version… Must be something with Win7 I think, not that Vista compatible as promised…

Very bad that my software wont work in Win7beta.

This not bad at all. Windows 7 has nothing to do with VMware. If vmware can’t get their act together to keep up with the latest OS then this has nothing to do with Microsoft.
It’s very bad that VMware is not keeping up with the times…Very bad vmware.

How is anyone surprised by this?
A fair portion of thinapps wouldn’t work in Vista if they were created in XP and vice versa. The app packager couldn’t have predicted the future to guarantee compatibility with an OS that wasn’t available.

They also have stated that the reason why the current Thinapp product does not work with Windows 7 is because Microsoft decided to change some of their API calls in Windows 7 that their program used. They have to go back and make sure their application (ThinAPP) reflects those changes.
It very well could have been a conscious move by Microsoft to increase the use of the Windows XP Mode along with Microsoft Virtual PC. That’s only speculation, though. They may have had other reasons, or what are actually ‘complimentary’ reasons.
If you follow it on their forum, they have said they are working on a fix and that they should have a version with Windows 7 support in Q1 2010. I’ve also heard statements about Q4 this year (2009). Either way, they are working on a fix. It’s not really their fault that Microsoft decided to change some calls that their program relied upon and used.
Too me, that means I’m going to have to ‘break down’ and INSTALL something on a few computers that are testing Windows 7. That sounds so funny to those who do not use application virtualization. By the time widespread adoption hits, I’m sure VMWare will have a release that will work well with Windows 7.
We need to get out of the mentality of quicker is better. A little delay for early adopters, but it should be no sweat. Be a little more patient.
